If you
needed to find a particular book on a particular subject, what kind of
questions might you need to answer to find the resource you needed?
- What is the
content of the book?
- How would the
book be described?
- Where would
the book be located on a library shelf?
- How is the
book classified?
- What subjects does
this book cover?
|
From the physical
perspective a book may be described by it's ISBN (International Standard Book
Number), title, author,
publisher, page
count, etc. More importantly, a book may also be described by its contents.
|
The Library Management System (LibManagement) was
created by Latin America/Caribbean Library Services (LACLS) in order to fulfill a need in Bible schools outside the United
States. Missionaries Everett Ward and Mike Peterson laid out
the criteria needed and gathered information from the field to
provide the specifications for the program. Then, qualified
and experienced field personnel carried out research and
testing before the features and characteristics of the
program were finalized.
LibManagement, developed by *Albert J. Anderson,
understands the way libraries work. It provides a way to
document over 20 book properties. Objective properties such
as title, author, ISBN, editor, translator, volume, language,
publisher and more can be documented.

Four major subjective properties are also
available for documentation. These include:
-
Categories – 30 broad categories
-
Subjects – over 400
-
Dewey Decimal classification – more than
2,000 entries
-
Summary – a brief profile of each book
-
Although all types of books may be
documented with LibManagement, the list of categories and
subjects incorporated in the software is especially designed
for the documentation of religious books.
-
LibManagement is a valuable asset not only
for the Bible school library, but also for the pastor’s or
missionary’s library. So, whether you direct a school
library or simply want to organize your personal library,
LibManagement can help.
-
Spanish and English versions are available
and include an operating manual and bilingual technical
support via phone or e-mail. Periodic updates of
LibManagement will be made available through LACLS with
minimal charge.
-
This program may be obtained through LALS
for the affordable price of $300.
Also
new programs are available:
-
Library Browser. This valuable feature includes a wild card
search that permits the user to search the entire database
looking at titles, sub-titles and abstracts that contain a
specific word or phrase. With these search capabilities and
user-friendly tools, you can print out ready-to-use spine
labels and library cards as well as a variety of reports and
book lists. Most panels have a screen print option. Books
may be tagged for listing and printing in a bibliography report.
-
Dewey
Classifier: In the
Browser program there is a feature where you can look up subjects
and it will show all the possible Dewey Classification in which it
can fall under, making this tool easy for the librarian to classify
new added books.
-
Checkout books:
This
program documents the checkout and check-in of library resources by
a patron (library resource user). The resource can be a book,
magazine, tape, CD or any other library resource. The program
classifies resources into one of two categories: books and other.
