Library Training Seminars

The purpose of the LACLS Library Training Seminar is to help schools develop and maintain their libraries. Traditionally this seminar is a three-day on site seminar with several sessions. Each session is targeted for the development of a specific library need. Sessions also include practical hands-on work and training in library functions. (See below for the list of seminar sessions offered).

Library Training Sessions Offered:

  • Library Philosophy: definition of a library, objectives, history and general vocabulary.
  • Administration: an overall picture of how a library should be run. Selection and Acquisition of books.
     
  • Cataloging and Classification: ways to find proper book categories, how to choose Dewey Decimal numbers and a revised manual to help with classifications.
     
  • Computer Programs: presentation of the Library management software and its benefits.
     
  • Practical Workshops: visit a local library, evaluate one's own library and practice classification skills.

First International Library Workshop

The first International Library Workshop was held in Guatemala, Central America on January 25-27, 2001. The event was sponsored by the Guatemalan Department of Christian Education (Assemblies of God), which is directed by Reverend Roel Vela. 

Peggy McDonald, Associate Missionary in Mexico assisted director, Everett Ward. She worked with the late Missionary Lois Williams over the years and has become an expert in the area of Dewey Decimal classification.

There were 41 participants, coming from Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The group represented 21 Bible schools, with 15 directors, 20 librarians, and several professors. The event covered orientation and training in such areas as Library Philosophy, Library Administration & Management, Book Acquisition, Book Classification & Cataloging, and other important topics.
